An often overlooked area of your home can be transformed into a mudroom with IKEA AXSTAD cabinets.
You recently moved to a new house and would like to renovate it using IKEA cabinets. wonderful. Maybe you’ve already renovated your master bathroom with IKEA materials and are happy with the results. Now he’s set his sights on creating his IKEA mudroom in the only underutilized room in the house. However, while we know that your mudroom should complement your home’s aesthetics (especially the adjoining kitchen), you also need time to adjust to your mudroom space and understand all of your storage needs.
This was the main challenge facing customer Michelle in West Hartford, Connecticut. She chose IKEA’s SEKTION kitchen system and her IKEA AXSTAD matte white walls with her cabinetry and subtly modified some cabinetry to create a warm, comfortable (and very functional) IKEA mudroom. I made.
“The mudroom is adjacent to the kitchen, so we wanted it to match as much as possible. Being a hiker, I wanted a coat closet Maximize storage space for shoes and other things Add a new charging station (or two) Install a bench and store muddy shoes and boots on the floor We set up a shoe box where you can do it,” explains Michelle.
After researching an IKEA kitchen, Michelle found IKD designer Frank designing a mudroom online, which she described as “the rest of our quintessential New England Colonial home. It was described as a transitional style mudroom that fits the piece. In addition to IKEA AXSTAD cabinets, the 53-square-foot mudroom features IKEA’s her BARKABODA walnut veneer countertops with cabinet cubies and a custom 15″(d) x 50″(w) bench. Additional items such as the IKEA BAGGANAS black knobs (measured 13/16”) and his IKEA FORBATTRA toe kick in matte white. IKEA FORBATTRA cover panel in matt white. Galvanized IKEA FIXA countertop support fixture and orange IKEA FIXA drill template. The mudroom’s ceiling heights range from 86 inches in the back to 102 inches across the rest of the room, so it was important to combine these materials together. Even more impressive, the total cost for the IKEA cabinets was $2,359, and the miscellaneous items list cost $1,489 for a total cost of only $3,848. !
Mudroom also includes some IKEA cabinet “hack” mods. A custom cubby/bench, custom cut cabinets and one stacked wall cabinet to the left of the mudroom provide a dynamic built-in look and additional storage options. For the rear cabinets, an 80″ tall IKEA AXSTAD cabinet was custom cut to 60″ with a custom bench built by a local carpenter on the right side, perfect for getting ready for a long day on the trail.

easy to install
Michelle had some previous DIY experience after remodeling the master bathroom when she and her husband first moved in. So when she decided to assemble and install Ikea cabinets in her mudroom, it wasn’t too difficult. (We even did the electrical work ourselves!)
“The bathroom project included a vanity, toilet, storage closet, lighting, mirrors and tile around the sink. The work was completed in April, and the installation took about two weeks, with no delays from IKEA or the contractor. As for the IKEA backorder, the designers simply substituted materials they had in stock, so it went smoothly. ,” explains Michelle.
To support the project, Michelle hired a local carpenter who specializes in fine woodwork to cut large cabinet pieces and countertops, and translated IKD’s design plans to create benches and wall shelves. . She added that she decided to work with IKD because “I liked her ability to combine IKEA products in creative ways that go beyond what IKEA store designers do.”
No Mad No Lotus
The mudroom was an unfinished room in the rest of the house, so Michelle and her husband wanted to make sure it worked functionally and aesthetically with the rest of the house.
“We considered semi-custom cabinets, but we weren’t sure if they were available and the prices were significantly higher than IKEA. We also liked the look of IKEA cabinets. We proposed AXSTAD matte white cabinets that are perfect for the adjoining kitchen.
Functionally, this was important as there was concern that the corner cabinet doors would bump into each other, making the space less efficient. To address this, they have devised their own corner braces to connect and support the L-shaped structure of the cabinets. This also allowed me to maximize storage without removing other wishlist items such as custom benches.
The couple also requested cabinets with drawers instead of doors. tall cabinet shelves. wall corner shelf; wall cabinet to ceiling; coat hooks; the largest possible coat closet; computer and charging station. Her two drawers for office supplies and the maximum amount of shoe storage (including an open shoe box) with easy access to hats and gloves. A bench with a cabinet on top. A display space for pottery (made out of plywood by a carpenter) and a narrow cabinet for upright cutting boards and serving trays.
Choose the IKEA MAXIMERA medium drawer to match the IKEA AXSTAD wall cabinet (which includes a two-outlet charging station in a cubicle cutout) for easy storage of seasonal clothing, backpacks and other sports equipment, and storage for your gear. Made preparation and unpacking smooth. Charging is an IKEA AXSTAD base cabinet with 24″ (W) x 30″ (H) drawers. And they now display their ceramic collection on shelves above benches and tall cabinets, adding a punch of color to the space’s neutral tones.
Modified IKEA Mudroom
One of the other keys is the design changes (or cabinet “hacks”) made in the space.
“The main challenge was devising and installing braces for the L-corner construction, which worked well. We also custom cut the height and depth of the coat closet and made shoe boxes out of the extra shelves we purchased. We had a carpenter use leftover butcher block to build a bench out of furniture grade plywood and a 60″ (L) by 9″ (W) porcelain/hook shelf on top. rice field.
Specifically for the back coat closet area, the couple custom cut the 80″ tall unit to 24″ (W) x 24″ (D) x 60″ (H), with doors 24″ (W) x I made it 60 inches. (blood). The closet area also features 1 interior shelf and 1 hanging rod.
Meanwhile, the adjacent section has a custom configuration of 24″ (W) x 15″ (D) x 15″ (H) with drawer fronts measuring 24″ (W) x 15″ (H), The medium MAXIMERA drawer is 24″ (width) x 15″ (depth).
When asked what her favorite part of the mudroom design was, she pointed to the uniqueness these custom touches created.
“We now have a beautiful built-in pantry/mudroom/coat room that didn’t exist before. ” concludes Michelle.

“I think our strategy of doing the cabinet assembly and most of the installation ourselves makes a lot of sense and is incredibly cost-effective. Hiring IKEA has also helped.Overall, IKEA has greatly improved the quality and ease of assembly of the cabinets. We couldn’t be happier!”
