Our living room has a place that needs life, and I wasn’t sure if real wood would work well in the place. It was more than I expected to use.
One look and I knew how packed it was. This tree isn’t cheap by any means, but I quickly found it to be well worth the price.
This tree was tall (about 5ft) with lots of branches and lots of Japanese maple leaves. It’s a gorgeous fake plant and definitely one of the best I’ve seen !
I had a hard time putting it in the cart because it was full. 😉 I had to stand it upright. 😂
It has two trunks with very slightly painted moss-like details.
It ticked all the boxes for me, but I knew it would look better when I got home!
3 easy tricks to make fake plants look real!
1. Softly inflate the branches and leaves.
Many fake plants come like fake Christmas trees.
Most of these have wires in the branches or are at least made of plastic that allows them to be manipulated to some extent.
Add a slight curve to the branches as they move away from the trunk to give them a more natural look.
Make sure the leaves are separated as they may stick together during transportation.
Remember that real plants are rarely symmetrical, so you don’t want them to look perfect.
Real plants grow toward the sun, so don’t be afraid to try tilting the branch slightly toward the window.
2. Increase your presence with a large planter.
My first step is always (everytime 😂) Turn a planter that is too small into a planter that is too big. Those tiny little pots are totally freebies.
I do this with fake plants of all sizes – instantly makes them look more realistic!
I stole this from another room in the house. Two colors and he comes in three different sizes (this is the 16 inch version, which I spray painted black). Great shape and looks high end.
I also love putting plants (real or fake) in decorative baskets. Old candle containers are great planters for small plants.
3. Cover the base of the plant with fake soil
One of the biggest ‘tels’ in houseplants is false soil. This is easy to fix. Use moss to cover the “soil” at the base of the tree, just like a real plant.
I used a plastic shopping bag to fill the empty space between the two planters. This gave me a surface to place the moss all over.
A layer of old newspaper, bubble wrap, or flat cardboard on top will also help.
It’s getting better! ! :
That’s the biggest secret – a stronger base goes a long way to making your fake plants look real!
This fake plant has brought a lot of life to this corner of our family room. I love it!:
Other tips for fake plants and trees:
- If you want to avoid moss, you can add a small layer of real soil on top of the planter.
- Decorative river stones are another great way to cover fake plant plastic soil. (This is also a great deterrent for curious cats.)
- Don’t be afraid to touch up the stems and trunks with spray paint or acrylic craft paint!
- Just like a real plant, dust the leaves from time to time.
Remember – one of the biggest payoffs for a plant being fake is that it that too Perfect! Don’t be afraid to play with it and change it up a bit!
