As a long-term renter and currently looking for an apartment again, I am a strong advocate for hassle-free, versatile, and renter-friendly designs. Wired lighting is never a bad idea for renters (my friends at EHD will attest to that), but I’m not in a position to invest in lighting right now. As I mentioned earlier, my husband and I are moving to a larger space soon, so buying and installing new hardwired lights in our current apartment feels like an unwise investment. This is a personal choice, partly coming from my fear of spending big bucks on something temporary. This topic is for another day, or perhaps a therapist :). I love customizing my home, but I’m pretty picky when it comes to lighting. At this point in life, there’s nothing wrong with using plug-in lighting to create atmosphere and style. Anyone else?? I hope so because today we’re talking about no-wire lighting and where you can buy one if you hit the market.
wait a minute. What are the advantages of unwired lighting?
Before we go any further, we have to admit that hard-wired lighting has many advantages. It’s what makes your home look custom and purposeful, and as design enthusiasts we want our homes to look as good as possible. But in some cases, it’s not the most practical, budget-friendly, or unfeasible if you don’t have the ability to retrofit. It’s important to know that there are other options. Also note that I personally like the relaxed look of swag cords and don’t find it offensive (everyone is different, I know it’s not for everyone increase). That said, non-wired lighting also has some advantages.
- You have more freedom in where you put the lights. Wired lights must be wired to the junction box and you have no control over where the junction box is placed unless retrofitted.
- Wired lights are often tailored specifically for a space, while unwired lights are more versatile and can be easily moved from room to room. This is especially helpful if you’re renting, moving, or planning to eventually move.
- No need to hire an electrician. This saves money and time, and makes plugin options more budget-friendly.
In addition to these benefits, I think plug-in lighting can be just as stylish as hard-wired lighting. Especially now that there are so many great companies producing quality no-wire lighting, you don’t have to sacrifice style for function. for example…

In Arlyn’s bedroom, two plush pieces of furniture flank the headboard. plug candelabra Stylish bedside lighting from Hudson Valley Lighting. Light from lamps and floor lamps only reaches far, so sconce is a great way to add height to your lighting plan. However, since Arlyn is a renter, wiring the sconce wasn’t an option. Instead, she opted for these plug-in sconces. The impact is really special and looks more custom than with a table lamp. If you don’t like the look of a hanging cord (I know many of you don’t ;)), you can easily hide the cord by placing it behind a nightstand or other piece of furniture. would be a nice hack. It also adds more nightstand real estate, which is pretty awesome.
