A settling stain can completely ruin you and your upholstery. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way about removing old stains from upholstery.
Upholstery should be vacuumed frequently to keep the fabric in good condition and prevent dust and crumbs from settling on the body of the furniture. For old stains, it’s amazing how just vacuuming will lighten the stains. This should always be the first step when dealing with this kind of damage. You won’t know what you’re dealing with or how bad the dirt really is until all the loose particles are vacuumed up.
Check cleaning instructions
Check the upholstery cleaning policy. This will allow you to correctly know the best way to deal with stains. Some parts can be washed with water, while others must be directly transferred to various solvents. If your furniture doesn’t have a cleaning code, as is often the case with vintage and antique furniture that has been refurbished over the years, do a quick spot test on hidden upholstery. I like to test water, vodka and vinegar. Because these are always the first choice for cleaning before embarking on stronger chemicals.
If the furniture can be cleaned with water, apply a little steam to the stain to loosen it and make it easier to handle. I usually just pick up my iron and use the steam button for this application. No need to drag out the steamer to treat small areas.
This is the stage where I’m scratching my head, hoping that a simple solution will suffice. If the furniture can be cleaned with water, mix a small amount of dishwashing liquid with cold water and use a wrung out sponge to blot the dirt with the soap mixture. Be careful not to rub the dirt. At this point, the stain is unlikely to settle deeply, but rubbing can weaken the fabric and cause pilling. Then rinse the sponge and soak up some of the soap mixture using only water. Press dry with a cloth or paper towel. If you can’t clean your furniture with water, try using a cloth dipped in vinegar or vodka and wiping off the dirt. Both vinegar and vodka will lose their odor once the area dries.
If more gentle cleaning doesn’t work, it’s time to do some heavy duty cleaning and eliminate powerful vacuums. Any cleaner you use should be spot tested on an inconspicuous area of your furniture. Luckily I didn’t set foot in this area and the dirt fell off, but the few times I’ve spilled a glass of red wine or a mug of hot coffee, Wine Away has truly been a lifesaver. If the stain remains throughout this cleaning process, you are dealing with one stubborn stain. This process can be very tiring and frustrating, but starting over can sometimes give you the results you want. In the aforementioned white chair situation with wine, it took him two passes before the stain came off. The second time I entered Phase 2, I really thought this stain was going to go nowhere, but my patience paid off and the stain disappeared.
