How to install a DIY wood plank wall
To construction 2 style
Before
As you can see, we did a complete overhaul upgrade for this bathroom. One of the things we wanted in this design was wood plank walls. By incorporating earth colors and textures, I wanted to create a space with a spa-like calming feel.
The easiest way to bring warmth and depth to any space is with wood. So, to create this experience, I decided to create a large wooden wall right behind the beautiful freestanding tub. Let’s get started!

As you know, the first step in any bathroom remodel is the demo. Completely destroyed the entire room.Learn more about here.
Once you’ve demoed the entire space, it’s time to put the room back together. The white walls there were a blank canvas of wooden plank walls.
1. Choose materials
The first step is choosing materials. With so many different types of wood and great options to choose from, it ultimately comes down to how the space looks you want.
Some wood accent wall options to consider:
- Reclaimed wood – This can be wood from a pallet, or pickets from an old fence, or whatever you like the look of. If you don’t like the old or rustic look of that barn, remember that even reclaimed wood can be sanded down to look new and fresh. wood style..
- Shiplap – Made popular by Joanna Gaines, Shiplap is now readily available at most lumber stores. Your local store often has pre-primed white shipwrap. If you’re looking for a stained wood option for Shiplap, you may need to make it as this tutorial shows you how to do it.
- Slatted walls are very popular and add a beautiful texture.
- Peel and stick wooden board/optional Easy to install.
Our design plan is Kohler Design Center, Inside the showroom was beautiful, clean and smooth wood paneling. So I used 4×8 maple veneer sheets to create this look for this project. Then cut the sheet into 4 inch planks. Given the dimensions of the wall that the planks will be placed on, I determined that I needed just under two pieces of material.
Tip: If you don’t have a table saw or a circular saw with a clamp, you can also have the material cut at Home Depot or your local hardware store if you’re a little nervous about getting perfectly straight edges. increase.
2. Wood finishing (cut, stain, seal)
After selecting the type of material and cutting the sheets, it is time to dye them. Again, your choice of stain color depends on the type of look you want.
For this project I had custom stains to match the rest of the trim and woodwork on the house. and created a three-dimensional effect in the design. We also custom-made this in-reno dressing table to match the wooden plank walls perfectly.
To make this project even faster, consider staining it with a sealer and completing the finishing job in 2-3 easy coats. we love this brandagain Give this brand a try.
Be sure to brush with the grain when applying to ensure the finish looks nice. Also, multiple coats are recommended (especially if this is in your bathroom) before adding a second coat, lightly sand with 220 grit or better sandpaper and remove all dust with a tack his cloth please. Sanding between coats greatly improves the smooth, factory-finished look of any project.
3. Create your design
Once the wood board is stained, sealed and dried, it’s time to create the design layout. The length to cut the panel differs depending on the space of the room. The key is to never align with the pieces in the row directly above or below.
Wood wall paneling pattern ideas:
- brick pattern
- herringbone
- diagonal
- Horizontal
- vertical
- diamond
Also keep in mind that using spacers in the seams can change the look of your design of choice.
One of the most classic designs is the brick pattern we chose. In this pattern, each row is offset by half the board width. A timeless layout that looks great in any room and in any material.
I also decided to create a niche inside the plank wall, so of course I had a place to set the mood with candles and decorations. I created a niche by putting a small rectangular piece back together.
4. Measure and cut
Once the design layout is created, measure, cut, and hang. I cut the board as I laid it out on the wall, following the brick stacking pattern. To calculate the length to cut the board, I measured the width of the wall and divided it by 3. Depending on the length of the wall, you may need to split it further.
An easy way to ensure that the board is cut to the same length every time is to set a stop on the miter saw. Note that not all walls are perfectly square which is why I trimmed the boards. Cut one at a time to avoid gaps.
5. Installation
Our favorite part is seeing your design and project all come together.
Starting with a clean horizontal line, I installed the first row of wood just above the niche and glued the first board in place with liquid nails. You can also add some
Tip: **If you use a hammer, be sure to use a set of nails to avoid damaging the front of the beautifully finished board.
Tip: To avoid large nail holes, a pin nailer is a dream come true.
This row will bear some of the weight of the row above, so it might not be a bad idea to use a stud finder to add two nails to the studs. Then we moved up gradually so that each board stuck halfway through the board below.
If it weren’t for the niche to worry about, I would have started in the top left corner. If you start from the top, make sure the ceiling is perfectly level. We wanted a perfect piece that was just above the niche, so we started above the niche. Wherever you start, add one plank at a time, he adds one row at a time, working up or down, continuing the design.
Once you reach the top or bottom of the wall, you may need to cut the board in half to fill the gap. Just use a table saw or circular saw for this. (But I think a table saw is probably the easiest and safest way for this narrow piece of wood.)

Question-and-answer session:
What is the wooden board on the wall called?
If the whole wall or only half is covered, this depends on the orientation of the board.
In many cases, if the entire wall is covered, use wood siding. The planks themselves can be called beadboards, v-grooves, shiplaps, slats, or simply planks. Depends on the style of the board itself.
If only the lower half of the wall is covered, it is generally considered siding or siding. It is a decorative panel that decorates a part of the wall. They can also be used to protect walls from damage from chairs (sometimes called chair rails) or to hide damage. There are dozens of types of siding boards, but the most popular are boards and battens.
Are wood panels cheaper than drywall?
The short answer is no. Often when installing wood siding, drywall is placed underneath. If the wall is drywall and the seams are properly taped, this wall construction will increase the R-value or insulation value of the wall. It also creates the perfect place to add a decorative accent wood wall.
As long as you don’t have unlimited access to free planked finished lumber, drywall can be a cheaper alternative.
How do you attach the wooden board to the wall?
This tutorial above describes the general method, but some important first steps are
- First, find and mark the studs where you plan to attach the wood panel. This will help you know where to nail.
- Mark the starting line with a horizontal line. Make sure the first row you install is perfectly horizontal. All other columns work with it.
- Add line by line from the start line until the entire section you want to cover is installed.
