Hey, guys! It’s been a while since he finally joined the EH community, but he’s really excited to share this project with you. It was an honor to take over the reins as Velux As a brand ambassador and host of the Brighten Up Any Room Giveaway, I’m thrilled with how this space came together. So let’s meet the winners and see which spaces they’ve nominated for makeovers.
But first! very! There were so many great entries it was very difficult to decide on just one. In the end, we chose Beto as the winner! Viet lives in Los Angeles with her husband David and her baby Ocean. Isn’t Ocean a cool name!? He’s also the coolest little toddler, but digression. Viet and David bought their first home and had their first child around the same time as the pandemic. Viet quickly realized that the room that had been used as her telecommuting space should also serve as her guest space. Shortly after moving in, they discovered that the room was most likely the original master bedroom, and also unearthed some rather surprising original hardwood floors hidden under the carpet. I love discovering the original details of old folk houses! The floor was a surprising find, but the room itself is quite small at about 100 square feet, and after returning to work from her maternity leave, Viet had to resort to space a little sooner than she thought, leaving her at a loss. It was late at night. what to do with it They painted it a sunny marigold yellow, and she envisioned a “feminine, cozy library vibe,” but it fell just short of her vision. was to not only bring us closer to that goal, but to make it a workspace and a sleeping space for our guests.
The VELUX skylight installers visited the site to determine if this space was structurally suitable for a skylight, and with that green light, me and the VELUX team headed to LA. As someone who has a passion for small space living and bold color-filled design for small spaces, I was so excited to see this room nominated. I loved how they embraced its small size and wanted to maximize its potential as a family workhorse. I also liked it. I often try to convince people to be bold and lean towards color, but Viet’s home is filled with color and playful patterns from the moment you step through the front door. It was becoming a big project. Now that we have a little backstory, let’s take a look at the spaces we’re working on.

the room was not bad, but it could be better. 1. He of the space relied heavily on artificial light, with two windows on the smaller side and one facing the fence, so it didn’t let in the most ideal of light. good library atmosphere. 3. The trundle bed didn’t exactly shout “good night, dear guests.” 4. Her work area (hello, great mid-century desk!) could use a little better storage and streamlined organization.
What we love about this space is wall colorViet said he’s open to whatever we want to do in this room, either keep this color or use something else, but how do I get rid of this color? No! I actually had plans to commit to it. If you know me, you already know that was meant to extend to ceilings and trim as well!
After visiting Viet and understanding the space and her overall needs, I came up with a plan to turn that small footprint into something dual-use, functional and beautiful.

There’s a lot to elaborate on here, but let’s start, of course, with the skylight. The VELUX Solar Powered Fresh Air Skylights are the true heroes of this space! And boy am I glad they did!

They flood this room with much-needed natural light and fresh air, giving the space an amazing visual impact.of room darkening shades Viet gives you full control over light concentration, allowing you to adjust according to how much (or less) natural light you want to experience in your space. This is perfect for office areas with multiple screens. Viet liked the desk so close to the window that it was left in its existing location.

The key to making the most of this small space is murphy bed It features floor-to-ceiling side cabinet storage that spans the full length of the back wall. I was able to have a queen bed for my guests, storage for all my books, and a new place to store my work files. A Murphy bed is a secret weapon for small spaces that need to double as a sleeping area. I wanted this piece to feel like beautiful built-in furniture, so I chose a beautiful walnut finish that complements the vintage desk and other mid-century pieces in her home.

On the wall that once held the bookshelves, I created a mini gallery wall of family photos and beloved artwork, along with a few small benches. Not only can it be used in the office, but when it is used as a guest room, it can be used as a place to store bags and personal items.
We brought some art to complete the room mint From beautiful bedding to complement her existing work brook linen, gorgeous rugs Jungalow benches, pillows, and accessories are home goods, basket And a West Elm planter, arched rattan wall shelf From the world market and, of course, from some plants. I always try to incorporate as much of my client’s belongings into newly designed spaces as possible. Beto’s gorgeous textile, which I used as a bed scarf, was a great inspiration for the rest of the space’s overall design and color story.

The key to properly arranging a very small space is having a clear understanding of how it needs to work. By fine-tuning all her needs, we were able to create a space for her Viet that offered both function and beauty. The room is chic like a boutique hotel room and feels like a good place to work.
