A new poll reveals that more than half of people in the UK use a smartphone or tablet device in bed. In fact, he’s the second most popular place to use his smartphone in bed, after watching TV.
A UK Screen Time study also found that the vast majority of people, 78%, check their phones or use smart devices within an hour of going to bed.
And when it comes to this nighttime no-no, men appear to be worse than women, with 81% of men saying they look at a screen just before turning off the lights, compared to just 77% of women.
But it seems that the older you get, the wiser you get. Or maybe you just need more sleep. 92% of people between the ages of 16 and her 24 use a mobile phone just before bedtime, but only 57% of the 55+ age group.
The convenience of smartphones means you can chat, shop, and scroll through social media channels almost anywhere. In fact, 1 in 3 of her uses her phone in the bathroom.
But for screen-loving Britons, one device just isn’t enough. The most common situations in which people use smartphones are while watching TV (64% use their mobile phone in front of the TV), while those using the device in bed (55%) do so. Continue. Other top responses were on the bus or train (34%) and at work (33%).
A similar study reported that adults in the UK actually spend around 1000 hours a year using their mobile phones in bed. This equals 45 days for him and 15 hours for her.
But that’s why this is not such a great idea. Scientists have found a link between exposure to the blue end of the light spectrum and sleep disturbances because blue light suppresses levels of the sleep hormone melatonin. It can prevent you from staying active and feeling dizzy and enjoying a deep sleep.
We recommend turning off your phone, computer, or tablet at least 45 minutes before you start drifting. Even the rays from a digital alarm clock or radio can be enough to disrupt your sleep cycle.
If there’s no way to give up your phone or tablet in bed, check out features like Night Shift that automatically adjust your screen’s colors to warmer colors and reduce the blue light it emits.
And if you’re lying in bed reading this, maybe it’s time to turn it off and dig into the book for a while. So take a look at some of the gorgeous fitted wardrobes in our range and call to see how you can turn your bedroom into a haven for great sleep!
