For my last home, I really challenged myself to step out of my comfort zone and use colors I had never used before. I’ve done this in the red music room, Polly’s purple bedroom, and this yellow playroom. I’ve taken the risk of using color in my previous home, but got bored with it after a few months. But without making those mistakes and swinging too far into the pendulum of beige and neutrals, I wouldn’t have been able to figure out which colors I actually like. I like soft and calm colors. This buttery yellow playroom proves that the typically bright and aggressive colors can be incorporated in a soft and gentle way.

Apparently, yellow is one of the more difficult colors to paint due to its high LRV (Light Reflection Value). The higher the LRV, the more light is reflected around the room, ultimately resulting in yellow light. And yellow light can reflect off yellow paint, with unpredictable consequences. For playroom, I did the following: yellow striped wallpaper Arranging them around the rooms and hallways and simply painting the cabinets a buttery yellow eliminated the excessive yellow light reflections.
Yellow is usually a very sunny, happy and optimistic color. Just looking at the pictures of the playroom makes me happy, but being in that space makes me even happier, so it was the perfect color for the playroom!according to ColorMeanings.comA dull, turbid yellow color can be seen as a sign of illness, jealousy, or vigilance, so be careful.
Brass and gold have a yellow tint
brass and gold in the kitchen
One of my favorite ways to bring ‘yellow’ into your home is with brass and gold metals. There’s something about using warm hardware that will liven up any space. I think the kitchen is a perfect example of that.

Like any other color, yellow swings warm, cool, bright, and muted. Here are some examples of each.
warm sunshine yellow
I am truly in awe of this warm, dandelion-yellow mud room. For some reason it works really well with black and I really like the glossy painted doors and trim.
cool, citron yellow
Add a little blue to the yellow to create a cooler citron yellow. The use of cool tones tends to lean toward a more modern style, which matches perfectly with the rest of this laundry room. (The paint color is Farrow & Ball Citrona Paint.)
gold & ocher
This hazy yellow wallpaper puts me in a trance. I feel like I could sit on that ocher sofa and look around the room for hours. Using muted colors adds complexity to the emotions you feel. I think this is a good example of that. This is not yellow like the sun. It’s a sultry, sultry yellow.
soft yellow
This yellow is close to a neutral color, so I think I like it very much. It’s not too flashy, it’s just the right color without getting bored.
