This living room makeover is a little organic, modern, and a little transitional. please look…
When my mother moved into our current house, there was a space she didn’t know what to do with. This is the main living room. This area is the first thing you see when you walk in the front door, so it was very noticeable while not in use and was roughly in the middle of the house.
To thank her for all she did for us, I wanted to gift her a room makeover. So, today I’m going to share a whole room makeover.
Living room makeover breakdown
We wanted to create a space that not only looks good, but also has functionality, and that the whole family can get used to. My mom’s style is a bit transitional and I gravitate toward rustic minimalist vibes, so the final look falls into the organic modern living room category in my eyes.
Now that the room is complete, it feels like a space that draws you here every time you go there. It has large sliding doors leading outside and now feels like the heart of the home.
How was your previous room?
As I mentioned earlier, it was a mostly unused space. With a separate study used as the main ‘TV room’, this living room space serves only as a seating and entertaining space. When I moved in, the walls were powder blue. This was quickly switched to a warm white and made a big difference. Just a chair and a few other things.
Here is a before photo. These are the photos when it was blue, after painting, and before decoration.
Now that we have a good idea of where this room started, let’s dive into how it came together. Starting with lag…
rug
I found a cozy neutral rug from Loloi (blair rug in ivory) and I soon found it was a perfect fit for the space. This is 9’3 x 12.
The bright colors help break down dark floors and the texture is really appealing.
furniture
The chair and sofa are from Article.of solna sofa It’s actually a pull-out sofa that converts into a bed whenever additional guests come into town. these chairs similar.
The coffee table is one of my favorites in the entire room. You can’t tell unless you actually see it, but it only has three legs, and they are triangular in shape. This adds unexpected character/uniqueness. It’s also a very beautiful piece of wood and a great place for puzzles.best price i’ve seen Scout & Agile.
I black floor lamp From articles with a slightly sculptural feel to framed artwork, tie in other black accents like medal legs on sofas and chairs. The side table is from Target and was a great budget-friendly find.
Another piece that belonged to us that I gave to my mother was this 6 tier dresserIt works very well when used as a sideboard/credenza. It offers plenty of great storage.
artwork
Artwork is one of those things that is very personal, so I asked my mom to pick her favorite piece of art for the sofa.she these world market I thought it was perfect for this space in terms of scale.
The artwork above the credenza was created especially for this living room. My mom has already found her art on a huge wall in her At Home under $40 in a frame. Based on that she made a very simple plaster art piece.
mirror + accessories
After she chose the artwork, I was able to use the colors of those pieces as a starting point for the accessories to tie it all together.
My mother wanted a mirror in the space. She decided to add on the other side of the sliding door. This allows more light to be reflected in dark areas of the space. As an aside, this mirror used to be ours, but we didn’t use it, so we gave it to her mother as a gift because it fit perfectly in her mother’s house. It’s from blue dot.
Pillows are from Loloi, Article and Joybird. The pink pillow is from the Amber Lewis X Loloi collaboration. onofre pillowThe circular pillow is Tussah Snow round pillow From Joybird.and the ivory square bouclé pillow It’s from the article.
Sources for some other accessories: woven seagrass basketa large lemon bowl (old amber interior), and an ivory round vase (resemble), a blue round vase (resemble), papier-mâché bowl (resemble).
plant
From the beginning, there was no doubt that there were plants in this room. My mother is a big plant lover. Here we incorporated some plants she already had, such as fiddle her leaves her figs.
And I brought in some very tall dracaena plants for different leaf heights and textures. It is possible.
And that’s all! The finished living room feels like a cross between my style and my mom’s. It was really fun working on a project for someone again. Maybe I do this more often? Hmm.
