This 6 bedroom home in York belongs to a writer, content creator and social media influencer Lisa Dawson Many people are familiar with Instagram. So this is both a house hunter and a house tour. That’s why I mainly use her photos, not those of realtors, but of course you can also visit: Ashtons Check out the floor plan and full image set of this home for sale in Gate Helmsley for £1.3m.
Originally from Reading, Lisa came to York on her husband’s business. The couple have three children, two of whom are students and the youngest is still in school, so the plan is to reduce the base to central York until the end of Al Rebel, then see what happens.
If you are not familiar with Lisa, Instagram She will always show you the details of her house, even rooms you’ve never seen. Fabulous Georgian home with 6 bedrooms (1 in another barn currently rented out on airbnb), 5 receptions, kitchen diner, office, utility room and gym. But what you might love is that the main bedroom has two dressing rooms. Imagine!
Now, as you can imagine, Lisa has had countless makeovers since moving in, including converting her barn into a fully equipped one-bedroom cottage, plus adding a glass roof to her courtyard for more living space.
You might think you’re not short on space, but by doing so, you’ve made the space more usable year-round, rather than just being an outdoor space for dry days. Because she already had one of those.
I’ll admit it’s a niche issue, but one of the main issues with large homes is using all the space appropriately. Now that she has three teenage children with her, it’s less of an issue, but if he has more than one living room, for example, it’s important to know when each room is in and what it’s used for.
We are all familiar with the concept of wearing 20 percent of your wardrobe 80 percent of the time. This is true for homes of all sizes. I always thought the idea of a so-called spare bedroom was a joke. who has spares? Maybe an office, a guest room, a laundry room, a playroom, a gym, or a TV room. That’s the key. Label the room. Then you will be able to take advantage of them.
And once you find a use for it, you have a reason to use it. Then go back to the reception room. It’s likely to get darker naturally, so it’s perfect for cozy winter nights and TV. There’s a reason big houses have morning rooms. Find a spot that has natural light and where you want to put your office. I can’t stress enough how bad an idea it is to lock your office to the smallest, darkest room. Because you don’t want to go to work. You’ll use that space for storage and paperwork, but since you’ll be carrying your laptop to the kitchen table or a sunny spot, consider if you can create a dedicated space there. (I have written a book I’m sure there are people interested in exactly that subject!).
The dining room is no longer in use, but you can still use the dining room if you often entertain. Again, the room may be naturally dark. Choose a sunlit room for a Victorian morning or breakfast room. And the same is true for smaller, average-sized homes. Find a sunny nook, put a chair there and have your morning coffee.
The tour ends in Lisa’s kitchen. It’s pale yellow now, but now it’s lavender (she peaked in that trend too early), black, and possibly green. Wooden doors are easy to repaint, and Lisa has changed the look of our kitchen many times over the years we’ve known each other. This is a real sign that you can completely change the look of your kitchen without tearing it all apart if you’re ready to spend a few days with a paintbrush. A recent addition was a vintage island she picked up locally. I don’t know if it’s included in the sale. But if you were to move to York, not only would you be able to live in this house, but I’m sure she’d throw in a copy of this book. her book It’s full of tips on how to make the most of your space.
