Sense of Place: Designing a Forever Family Home by the Sea
Monday may be one of the most anticipated days of renovation progress so far. Of course, there have been many exciting days, but yesterday we finally got to see the lights installed on the island and on the dining table, and…the big moment we’ve all been waiting for…Beatrix (to Beatrix Potter) Our blue series named after) was brought into the kitchen! Wow! we are excited!
It still takes a few minor tweaks to get Beatrix into place, but then we’ll share how lovely she looks in her new home.
Our kitchen is still a work in progress (and some things are still being changed), but today’s post also shows some photos of the new lighting. We are so grateful for your excitement to meet Beatrix and your enthusiasm for our kitchen every step of the way. It means a lot to me.
This kitchen is very special to us in ways that most people would never notice just by looking at pictures. So today I want to share a personal story about what inspired the design of our kitchens and how our history has influenced our sense of home. I was.
Many of you have followed our home adventures over the years and know that we cherish each home. Many of you have bonded with our home and expressed your grief when we had to leave. That’s the power of the house.
It’s always hard to leave a loved one. Because every space we touch becomes a part of us, filled with memories of the seasons of our lives.
My parents also loved the house, including the house we grew up in and the house our children grew up with, and our beloved family beach house (you can watch the two-part tour here). I had to leave the home we all loved.
None of them fulfilled my dream of having a “forever home,” but they are a chapter in our family story and an important part of our lives. fulfilled. We are grateful for that gift.
We have many stories that happened in different environments that we loved deeply, such as homes and places we lived in over the years (like the San Juan Islands and coastal areas where we now live!). Thanks to those places, we retain in our minds and hearts vivid pictures of the rooms and environments in which meaningful moments and many seasons of life took place.
Each of these places in our history shapes our sense of home and what it means to our families going forward.
This is why we felt so deeply into the timeless design elements of our remodeled kitchen.
We, like many others, knew that the design choices for this home would leave an indelible mark on our family. We wanted it to feel like a family home, welcoming and always a familiar part of our story.
The kitchen becomes the heart of the home, a sacred place where past meets present and where new generations of family stories are told. This is why I chose classic finishes such as marble, soapstone and beadboard. These are the ones that have stood the test of time. We’ve also added an exhibition area so you can continue to create and experience the simple pleasures of decorating for each season.
Rather than feel limited by the small footprint, we deliberately chose to tackle every square inch. You might think that your dream home or forever family home is on a large or sizable lot. Dream homes come in many shapes and sizes. In fact, we decided long ago that our dream for the future was to live in a small, charming house (we call it a cuddly house!) and get a bonus if it’s by the sea. was
I have so many fond memories of smelling the sea breeze, sandy walks on the beach, boating in marinas, hopping ferries and sailing from island to island, so it’s no wonder this island is so relaxing.
our new house has a place.
This is what draws us home. A sense of history and storytelling, and a deep and meaningful connection to our surroundings.
We look forward to showing you how the new space evolves as we finally make that dream a reality. A family home by the sea forever.
Thank you again for joining us on our journey home.
Are there any homes you loved or places that were part of your family’s story? We’d love to hear about them in the comments!
