prologue

Color is a powerful tool in interior design. Choosing the right colors can make a room lighter or darker, warmer or colder, wider or smaller, and is a great way to express your personal style. But choosing the right color for your home isn’t always easy, especially when you don’t know what looks good on you. That’s where the color wheel comes in! In this article, I’ll show you some basic principles for combining colors, and show you what different kinds of complementary and similar combinations look like in different shades (and why they work).

color wheel

A color wheel is a tool that helps you choose colors. Use it to create a palette for your interior design project or use it as a reference when looking at paint swatches in the store. The basic concept of a color wheel is to show all the different hues within each color spectrum, each on its own line or segment within the circle.

The primary colors are red, blue and yellow (see below). These three colors cannot be mixed with other pigments. These become the basic building blocks for other shades of pigment by adding white or black to each.

complementary color

Complementary colors are colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. Complementary schemes are popular for decoration as they create a bold and dramatic effect.

  • Red and Green: Red is warm and cheery while green is cool and soothing, so these two colors make a great complementary combination when used together in home interior design.
  • Blues and Oranges: Orange may not seem like an obvious choice for a complementary color scheme, but it pairs well with blue due to their shared qualities of warmth and vibrancy.

analogous color

Similar colors are next to each other on the color wheel. They are often used in interior design because they complement each other, but using too many similar colors at once can make a space look smaller and more crowded than it might seem. So while blues, greens, and yellows may all be great choices for accent walls and rugs in your living room (as long as other colors exist), painting all the walls of your home in these three shades is a no-brainer. is not wise. of paint!

ternary color

A triadic color is a set of three evenly spaced colors on the color wheel. The triad color scheme is suitable if you want to create a sense of balance and harmony in your home.

A triad can consist of any three colors, but it is generally recommended not to choose colors from opposite corners (red, green, blue) or adjacent sides (orange/yellow).

square tone

Square tones are colors that oppose each other on the color wheel, such as red and green or blue and orange. Used together they make a bold statement, but can be mixed with other colors for a more subtle effect. This combination is perfect for any room where you want to create a striking focal point, such as an accent wall or fireplace mantel.

  • Example: Use square tones in small increments. Too much of this color scheme can be overwhelming.

To dye or add white.

Dyeing a color means adding white to it. You can change the color by adding the right amount of white to any color, be it red, green, or blue. This will lighten the shades and make them more pastel. Adding black (or another dark color) does the opposite, darkening the shade and making it more muted.

Regardless of what the color wheel says, home interior design should reflect your taste.

A color wheel is a tool, not a rule. This is just a guide to help you understand how different colors interact. Color wheels are not bible. I can’t tell you exactly what color scheme you should use or how many steps of each hue you should have in your room. Instead, use it as a starting point for brainstorming ideas for your interior design project.

The most important thing when choosing home interior colors is knowing what best suits your own personal tastes and style preferences (which can change over time). You might find some shades work better than others depending on how they complement or clash with everything else in the room, and that’s okay.

Conclusion

Ultimately, your home is a reflection of who you are and what you like. You can’t always choose which colors to use, but you can always find ways to use colors that work for you. Whether you’re redecorating one room or adding pops of color throughout your home, remember that there’s no wrong way to decorate. if you need house painting company, call us now.
