Homeowner’s request. “Our client wanted a modern, refreshed look while maintaining the integrity of the historic home,” says designer Pamela Forman. “We came up with a design that stays true to the traditional feel of the house while still bringing a freshness to it.”
Detail of a low curb shower. Siberian gray marble look porcelain shower wall tiles and curb finish. Glass mosaic shower floor tiles. Frameless glass door. “The decision to go with a low-curb shower had a lot to do with improving accessibility and highlighting the tiling and design throughout the bathroom,” says Forman. “We wanted to keep the space open and airy.
Other special features. “Every element used in this bathroom has been chosen to flow seamlessly and bring a fresh elegance to the space,” says Forman. “The Siberian Gray polished porcelain slabs on the walls of the shower speak to the existing marble stone on the vanity countertops. It is brought to life by soothing colors and complemented by the calmness of the trim, vanity and wainscot, all brought together by polished nickel and glass hardware, plumbing fixtures and lighting finishes.”
designer tips. “Additional storage in the main bathroom was important to the homeowner, so we moved the shower 20 inches from the wall and added a ledge to allow easy access to storage baskets for frequently used items. We decided to do it,” says Forman. “There are ways to reimagine space that are less dramatic but that have a big impact on how the space functions.”
“Hmm” moments. “We had beautiful hand-painted pine floors all over the house,” says Forman. “It’s not common to use wood floors in a bathroom, but the client wanted to stick with wood to preserve the history of the house. We needed to be strategic in how to protect floors from overflowing showers, so we added stone-inlaid “bath mats” for homeowners to get out of the shower to minimize water exposure. . “
