Lyon (shown here) has tucked a food forest along the side of the garden next to the detached garage. Homeowners planted crops on the ground and on stilts. Pollinators play an important role in helping food forests thrive. The productive botanical palette includes wild currants, three types of grapes, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, artichokes, basil, kale, strawberries and beans. There are also passion fruit vines climbing the new wood and wire trellis next to the garage.
The Food Forest also has citrus, apricot, apple, plum, fig and persimmon trees. In addition to attracting pollinators, improving soil quality was also important. Lyon has added soil improvers to keep the soil rich. These include California coffee berries (Ramnas California, zones 7-10), catalina currant (ribes viburnum, zOne 8), California Lilac (CEanosus sp.), Sticky Monkey Flower (Mimulus aurantiax, zones 7-10) and alpine strawberry plants (Fragaria Vesca, zones 5 to 9).
